Fancy a slice of Japanese pizza? Okonomiyaki (Japanese for “grilled as you like it”) is perhaps best described as a thick Japanese wrap or pancake. As the name implies, it is often used as a base or wrap for a wide range of savory ingredients. Due to its esthetic flexibility, most Japanese restaurants tend to lean toward the Hiroshima style of Okonomiyaki – a layered pancake, often filled with yakisoba (grilled noodles). If you prefer a more laid back approach to cooking, Kansai-style Okonomiyaki might be for you. More akin to an omelet in make up, it almost always includes naigamo (long potato), and calls for far less preparation time!
A popular coupling with deep-fried, breaded pork cutlets (tonkatsu), Okonomi sauce is also a great base for Okonomiyaki owing to its strong, tomato-ey, Worcester Sauce flavor. Okonomi is relatively simple and hassle-free to prepare at home; a simple recipe of two tablespoons of Worcester Sauce, two tablespoons of Tomato Ketchup, one tablespoon of Soy Sauce, and a teaspoon of caster sugar thoroughly mixed together. Of course, if you prefer the convenience of Okonomi straight from a bottle, you can’t go wrong with Otafuku’s Okonomiyaki Sauce.
Comparatively similar in flavor to home-made Okonomi, Otafuku’s Okonomiyaki Sauce is a handy cupboard staple for those with busy lifestyles. And if you love sushi, it’s especially good with Tonkatsu Rolls!
